Normally, white shade looks clean and bright in most conditions. However, it is least decorative and can create a "drab" effect. In the ambient condition of bright sunshine and warm to hot temperature situations, white exterior is the most suitable to keep the interior cooler. However, it also causes glare to the eyes while approaching such buildings. Also, bright sunlight & environmental heat will cause the shade to turn yellowish comparatively faster. "Off white" or cream, grayish or brownish tinges will be more soothing. In combination with window sills and other recessed ornamental structures painted in matching deeper shades, these tinges create distinctively decorative effects without affecting the coolness of the interior.

In temperate climate regions, the exterior can be more colorfully painted in a much wider range and combination of pastel shades.

In cold climate regions, deeper shades, especially grays, will be preferable. Such climates also allow more vivid experimentation with brighter and/or deeper shade combinations.

Where seasons are more sharply defined, and especially with heavier rains during monsoon season, deeper shades with predominant gray or brown tints will be preferable for visual effects, since such shades camouflage the dust (that rains precipitate) settling on the surface. This also holds for regions with frequent dust storms. Although proper selection of paint will resist dust being absorbed in the paint coating, the dust precipitation does dull the exposed surface.

Colors also impact moods. For interiors, white shade seems common. However, bluish tinge is more soothing in the living room. Greenish shades are more restful in bedrooms. Cream color is more effective in the study room or office area of the house. Grayish or brownish/earthy shades may be better for less frequented closed areas of the house, eg basement or store room or utility room. Bluish shade also creates better effect in meditation or worship rooms. Game rooms and exercise areas are more effective with pinkish or yellowish shades. White is also suitable.

Transparent varnish is most suitable to enhance beauty of natural wood grains. Decorative heavy doors especially stand out with varnish or deep brown shades of oil paints. However, varnish is not the best option for wooden wardrobes. Use of oil paints is preferable. With adventurous color combinations with the rest of the decor in the room, exquisite effects can be created. Furniture in children's room may be in brighter shades of basic colors. They can create dramatic effects.
